Australian Cattle Dog Training Techniques
Posted Under: Uncategorized
Australian Cattle dogs are courageous, intelligent, and athletic. ACDs can be a bit time consuming to train and can become aggressive if you don’t know how to train dogs properly. So it’s important to get accurate information from dog training experts. Far from disappointing, the value of training an Australian Cattle dog correctly far exceeds the time and energy spent doing so. For Australian Cattle dog training, bear in mind that the first Australian Cattle Dogs were a mix between a dingo and a common drover dog. They were rugged and able to out-work pretty much any other breed of dogs. Thomas Hall, the man who originally bred Australian Cattle dogs, (then just called “cattle dogs”), relied on his creation so much for this success of his cattle breeding business that he refused to sell them to anyone else. While doing Australian Cattle dog obedience training with your pup, make sure you also allow them plenty of time for running and other exercise.

Their history of being cattle droving dogs means that Australian Cattle dogs have been bred to nip. Finding the right ways to stop a dog from nipping doesn’t have to be difficult when you know WHY they do it. An Australian Cattle dog nips at cattle and other animals in order to control the direction they are moving, (or to get them to start moving). But if they don’t have livestock to drove, they may start to nip or mouth other animal, (cats, other dogs, etc), and even people. Many people just let the nipping go because they think it’s “cute.” But that would be a mistake. Be very clear with your Australian Cattle Dog about your expectations when it comes to nipping. The key to training an Australian Cattle dog is often basic obedience training following by teaching them what they can and can’t bite. If you are not working your cattle dog, what they are allowed to bite may only be toys and treats, (such as bones). And for working ACDs, train them about the difference between livestock and the neighbor’s dog, (or young child).
