Basset hound training to teach your canine friend to eliminate correctly is essential. It is as vital as toilet training your own child hence it must be undertaken as soon as possible to prevent your little puppy from developing unwanted habits that can be difficult to get rid of in the future. Additionally, basset hounds are said that they’re slower to mature mentally and difficult to housebreak so it definitely helps to train them while they’re young.

To ensure effective training, it is preferred to not just know but to understand your dog’s physical capacities and restrictions. When housebreaking a young puppy, be aware that puppies don’t have complete control of their bladder or bowel until they are eight to ten months old. They cannot hold it just to avoid soiling your most valuable rug. A puppy will definitely do his business whether you like it or not, whether in the right location or not so needless to say, you have to supervise him right until he has mastered the art of eliminating correctly.

Take him out soon after he wakes up, after meals, after taking him out of the crate, when he is worried or excited, before going to bed and if he whimpers at night. You must also look out for clues that he needs to do his thing. These include running and sniffing, running in circles and squatting to relieve himself. With this, you are helping your pup get accustomed to going outside and further help him build regular potty schedule.

The mentioned dog training tips do not apply to young pups alone. Using the same method is also helpful when housebreaking grown dogs

Before basset hound training begins, choose as to which part of the house or yard you would want him to do his thing and be consistent with using that area to prevent confusion. Accidents can’t be avoided sometimes and if it happens, keep in mind that punishment is not helpful in obtaining positive outcome. Just clean the area thoroughly and better be watchful next time so that you could interrupt and provide corrections before something undesirable arises.
