Urinary tract infections in dogs are a frequent issue especially in female dogs. Urine is carried out of the body through the urinary system. The system is made up of the bladder, kidneys and the tubes that attach them.

When urine is discharged the bladder shrinks and when your dog needs to wait longer than they should to urinate the bladder expands. Over time holding in urine weakens the bladder and doesn’t allow for complete draining of the bladder, increasing the chance of a UTI. This is definitely a UTI cause you can manage by providing a frequent and constant schedule to walk or turn out your dog.

UTIs are commonly caused by bacterial infections. When bacteria find their way into your dog’s body it is frequently by contaminants typically in unclean food or water.  The urethra is another common way for bacteria to enter the urinary tract. Bacteria found in the bowel on the skin near the rectum or vagina can enter the urinary tract through the urethra. The bacteria moves upwards in the urethra and can cause bladder and urinary tract infections.

One UTI Symptom your dog will probably have would be whining from pain while urinating.  Look for these UTI symptoms as well:

When urinating they only pass tiny amounts

Even when housebroken they will have accidents in the house

Discomfort when pushing the stomach

The stomach can be swollen

The urine can contain some blood, look cloudy and have a foul smell

You will probably notice other changes in your dog as well.  Things like decreased energy, weight loss, licking of genital will be more prevalent if your dog has a urinary tract infection.
