Controlling A Puppy’s Leash-chewing Through Havanese Training

Havanese puppies at around twelve weeks are becoming more and more aware of the power of their senses. Sometimes, for them, everything simply must pass through their nose’s and mouth’s (or teeth, to be precise!) scrutiny. A puppy chewing on a leash is therefore something typical to expect. Besides, they are bound anyway to outgrow the idea that the leash is just another chew toy.

On the other hand, here are some handy ideas to put to use if you think its high time for some serious Havanese training action versus strap- and buckle-nibbling.

Instead of the bite-prone collar and leash, check out using a harness. In this alternative, the leash is attached on the back, making it harder to reach. Put it on the dog eight before leaving, so the dog can’t go for it.

Indeed, doing something about the leash may help out a lot. The following technique for a new way of putting the leash on the dog may just do the trick.

To start, hook the leash to the collar. Now, take the leash and go around the dog’s neck from the back of the neck to make a circle. Take the slack part of the leash and pull it through the leash handle. This gives you something like reins for a horse. The leash is attached to the collar but you now have two shorter leads instead of one long one. By basically making a knot form at the back of the dog’s head, the circle of the leash will ride higher on the neck compared to the collar. So far, most dogs do not seem to mind the feel of this double “leash”. Just remember that the lead and the dog must not be left unattended.

Lastly, here is a curious Havanese training way to train a dog to lay off the leash. The owner will walk backwards in this procedure, holding the leash of the dog. He or she will hold a long wooden spoon with a few smears of peanut butter, and entice the dog to follow. When there is some slack on the leash, the dog gets praise (plus licks on the spoon of course).
