Dog Breed: American Foxhound

An American Foxhound’s appearance is very similar to that of a Beagle. The dog measures from 21 to 25 inches at the withers and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. This breed’s sleek athletic body is well covered with a short coat that ranges from black, tan and white, tan and white or red and white color combinations. The strong, straight and well boned legs gave this breed immense speed and stamina.
Although this hunting breed has adapted the name America, these dogs have existed long before the land has gained independence from Great Britain. This breed originated from the English dogs that were brought to the New World in 1650 by Robert Brooke.
In its country of origin, these dogs were acclaimed for being excellent hunters. The British landed gentry utilizes these dogs to hunt foxes. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. The dogs are used by the settlers of the Crown colony to hunt foxes as well. However, because of the ferocious tenacious nature, it was rumored that the dogs were utilized by the English military commanders to track and hunt Indians.
The American Foxhound was developed from the crossing of English hounds with the dogs of settlers from Ireland and France. A new breed, the American Foxhound was developed.
The American Foxhound was actually developed to be a hunting dog. These dogs would be happiest if they are hunting. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. Foxes are the usual quarry of American Foxhounds but these dogs hunts other animals too.No wonder, the breed is highly valued as a hunting dog.

Highly energetic while hunting, this dog turns into a calm, gentle and sweet family companion. An American Foxhound gives its loyalty and friendship not only to one person.
