Yes you can do basic dog obedience training. Using simple commands will make life easier with your pet. Every dog owner should learn basic training, either by DIY books and videos or through professionally organized classes. When Hershey (my 140lb English Mastiff puppy) and I take our daily walks, it is not uncommon for us to see other dog walkers being pulled around by powerful, and undisciplined dogs. Dogs like people are not born with good manners, they need to be taught how to act. Therefore, it is critical to start training your pet early.

Books on dog behavior can help you learn how to stop dog behavior problems (for example, dog aggression). Training in the comfort of your own home can be a very appealing option, especially if you’d prefer not to spend lots of money on training classes for dogs, in which case a book on dog behavior would be a wise investment, but only if you put what it teaches you in to practice on a daily and consistent basis.

Proper dog obedience training is a continuous, life-long process - a work in constant progress. Proper training and care should always include obedience . You don’t have to be the Dog Whisperer to be successful with training your dog, but, you do need to be consistent with your efforts.

Training should always be fun and you should always follow some sort of professional course outline when training your dog at home. Remain positive, both in your attitude and in your technique. Positive reinforcement ( treats, praise, and toys) should always be used to reward your dog for all commands he/she accomplishes correctly.

Basic commands considered by many professionals to be critical are teaching your dog to walk by your side, sit, stay, down, up and come when called. Understanding the importance of positive reinforcement will make teaching dog obedience to your dog a lot simpler. It should be the foundation of any quality dog training program.
