Becoming a pack leader is an unexpected result of having a dog in your home.You were looking for a best friend but your dog needs a strong leader - that’s you.As you might expect, things to do with the ‘companion’ role have nothing in common with those associated with the ‘leadership’ role.   So if you are going to have a successful relationship with your dog you need to put the ‘companion’ role in the back seat and take up your responsibilities as a leader.Your dog will become insecure and attempt to assume the leadership role himself If you don’t.This can result in several mostly undesirable behaviours.

1 Manage your Dog’s Time

Create a routine and do not depart from it.   Dogs love a routine.Regularly use a crate to a schedule.   The crate is the safest, most effective form of confinement.Your dog will be eager to go there and feels safe and secure.You should get your puppy used to it as soon as possible and carry on using it all through his life according to his particular stage of development.

Your dog needs a structured life bound by consistent rules.   A fair leader allows room for expansion of boundaries as responsibility is proved.He also does not hesitate about removing some freedom or tightening boundaries if poor behaviours return.

2 Direct Activities

When you dog is out of his crate you should have an activity plan available which is not just ’sit and be quiet’.You dog must know what is acceptable behaviour in your home so you should actively practice obedience commands.Your dog’s raison d’etre is praise, his whole world revolves around it.Part of all dog training schedules is the opportunity to offer him that praise when practising obedience commands.

3 Be Consistent

Without consistency your dog will be confused and frustrated.Always use the same sequence of command words every time that you require a certain behaviour or action.Similarly, the same pattern must be followed by everyone in your home.Make sure that when you have a bad, stressful day you do not take it out on your dog.stressed outbreaks from you will cause stressful reactions from your dog.   Leaders need to remain in control of their emotions and must not behave in an erratic manner.
