Group Puppy Training
Posted Under: Uncategorized
Getting an early start to training and socializing your puppy with group puppy classes is a great idea. Puppies can start learning new tricks as early as 6 weeks old, so it is never too early to get started. There is no better time to get started with the socializing and basic obedience training of your puppy.
Once I started taking my puppies to group training classes I saw that my dogs grew up to be much better behaved than the puppies I had previously neglected training until they were much older. I had two very aggressive dogs prior to using group training classes. By the time I got around to obedience training these dogs myself at home, I already had some serious behavior problems to correct. However,I have never had a problem with the puppies that went to a group puppy class.
While your puppy was still in the litter with his siblings and the Mama dog, he was constantly getting lessons in doggy manners through his interactions with the other puppies and Mama. Whenever a puppy gets too out of line-perhaps he is playing too aggressively-the litter mates will gang up on him, or Mama will put a stop to his boisterousness by grabbing him by the scruff of the neck or putting a paw over him to hold him still. A Mama dog will hold him until he relaxes, becomes calm and submits. This is how puppies are taught their doggy manners. Just like our kids, puppies will greatly benefit from some guidelines to learn good behavior.
Once you have taken your puppy away from the litter he no longer has the benefits of socializing from his Mama and siblings, so it is up to you to make sure he is exposed to enough other dogs and people to not grow up with an aggression problem towards strangers. Since dogs are a very social animal, they enjoy companionship and are less well balanced without it. It is easy to see why it is that a puppy or dog that is kept confined and away from interaction with other puppies or dogs or people is much more likely to become aggressive. I think that is why my two earlier dogs had become quite aggressive-they grew up isolated in fenced yards.
Getting started with puppy training in a group class is the smart time to begin his training-you are training your pup before he has picked up any bad behavior habits. You will learn the techniques to use for continuing the training at home, and keep your puppy socialized, too. My aggressive dogs learned their obedience tricks, but they hadn’t learned how to be social creatures. A dog that is well balanced both socially and with obedience training fits well in any type of social situation.I have seen from personal experience that a puppy with the benefits of going to a group training class-he is going to be more comfortable in later social situations with people and dogs he hasn’t met before.
Even as young as 6 weeks your puppy is capable of learning the obedience basics. If you have you seen the cool videos on YouTube of little puppies doing tricks you know what I mean.
If you follow this one important tip and bring you puppy to a group training class you will be glad you did. You can find some group training classes for puppies in your neighborhood-be sure to check first to make sure they use only positive reinforcement techniques. In addition to the benefits of early obedience training and socializing, my puppy and I had a lot of fun going to the classes.
