How To Stop Dog Biting

It is a serious matter if your dog bites someone, so preventing that from happening before it gets to that point is priority one. One thing to take note of is there are some differences a dog that mouths your arm during play time and one that actually bites. Mouthing is not a behavior that is aggressive, especially where puppies are concerned. It is advisable though to put a stop to this behavior  because later on it will more than likely become quite annoying.

A lack of socialization, training and quite possibly some of his genetics is more often than not the cause of dog biting. In order to hopefully get the biting to stop, training should begin at once.

Stop Dog Biting

Chew Toy

Dogs and puppies are going to need to chew. If they are given a toy they won’t feel like they have to chew your hands (or chairs, or shoe or papers..). When your pooch attempts chewing on your hand, in a firm voice say NO! then offer some chew toys in its place.

Just Don’t Play

If your pup nips or bites at your hands, make a yelping sound that is loud and quit playing with him or her. If you do this right away, your pet will begin to understand that biting is wrong and play time is over.

Learn The Cause

Is your normally laid back pooch appearing to show a sudden sign of aggression? If so something has probably caused his behavior to change suddenly. It might be that your pet has undergone a traumatic event or he could possibly have a medical problem. If this aggressive behavior has always been with your dog then he could have been abused way back when or he was just never socialized.

Once a physical problem has been ruled out the re-training process with your dog can move forward.

If your pet is a little older and has “biting issues” then it is going to require some patience and time to break the cycle of this behavior problem and could be a bit more difficult. There are some great training programs out there that you can get if you want to try it from your own home. If you try it from home for awhile and it doesn’t seem to be working, find a local trainer to take him to.

Here Is More Help

The repercussions of your dog biting somebody could be huge, this could include a severe injury to that person and you could possibly have to put your dog to sleep. If the aggression signs that your dog is showing are getting severe, avoid the group training and get the one on one training.

There will be cases that the answer to your problems could be as simple as finding another way to interact with your dog. Do not use faulty training techniques to fix this behavior problem because it could backfire on you.

The results you get from a good home training program or by working with a good trainer should help curb your dogs desire for bad behavior. Remember, if your dog is showing clear signs of being a biter make sure he wears a muzzle if there are going to be people around.

There is no question that it is probably tough admitting to yourself that your beloved pet could actually hurt some body you must not ignore the problem or you could be inviting big time trouble. If you’ve got a puppy start training and socializing today and if it is a dog get a vet check and then start training like there is no tomorrow.
