Stopping Dogs From Whining.
Posted Under: Uncategorized
If you’re trying to curb your dogs whining tendancies, you’ll have to identify what is causing him to do it.
Dogs whine as a way of showing us what emotions they are experiencing - pleasure, pain, fear, loneliness etc.You mustn’t punish your dog for showing his feelings, but rather show him the way in which you would prefer him to behave in a given situation. Whilst some dogs seem to favour whining over other forms of expression such as barking, all dogs can be persuaded to choose another method of expression, so long as you are consistent in your re-training.

Step one is to withdraw any attention he receives for starting his whining behaviour. Perhaps your dog whines from excitement at the prospect of going on his morning walk to the dog park. If your usual response is to quickly get him leashed and out of the door in order to stop his whining, really, you are confirming to him that whining is a great way of persuading you to take him on a walk! You should actually be doing the opposite - rewarding your dog for calm patient behaviour.
You could give this technique a try…
Ask your dog to “lie-down” or “sit”, and then don’t do anything until he does as you have asked. If he continues to whine, tell him ‘No’ or ‘Be Quiet’. Just give this command once, and then wait for him to obey it.Don’t give him any eye contact while you wait for him to be quiet.
If he hasn’t done as you have asked after ten seconds or so, walk away from your dog and begin to do something which he does not associate with going on a walk – maybe go into the bathroom or kitchen – you want your dog to realise that his attempts to control your actions by his whining have not worked.

Continue to repeat these steps until he obeys your command to stay quiet and calm.
When he does, give him plenty of praise in a happy tone of voice – this will encourage him to repeat this behaviour the next time. It might take a few attempts before he starts to get it right, but by your being consistent every time, he will in the end work out what he needs to do, and more importantly he’ll see that whining isn’t a beneficial behaviour to him.
This method can be used for trying to stop dogs whining prior to feeding, whilst on a car journey, or in fact for any other bouts of whining that are due to excitement.
